Shocking news in Belgium as Olympic national hero Pieter Timmers has been brutally attacked.

His wife took to Instagram

Elle De Leeuw, Timmer's wife, expressed her disbelief at the incident on Instagram.

"Attacked, for no reason"

"On Tuesday night, Pieter and I were attacked, for no reason," De Leeuw wrote on the social medium.

Risk of losing a tooth

Timmer was injured on his lip and might lose a tooth, according to his wife's statement.

De Leeuw also injured

"I sustained back and shoulder injuries and apparently a concussion and whiplash as well," De Leeuw added.

Won't be working for a while

Timmers and De Leeuw both won't be able to work for a while. According to Belgian newspaper Het Nieuwsblad, the former swimming champion is currently working for the emergency ambulance services, while his wife is a Press Officer at Belgian media company DPG Media.

Swimming legend in Belgium

Timmers is a swimming legend in his native Belgium, having won a silver medal at the Rio Olympics in the men's 100 m freestyle, per World Aquatics.

He did so in a time of 47.80, breaking his own Belgian record, Het Nieuwsblad reported at the time.

European Championships

Additionally, Timmers won three medals at the European Championships and six medals at the European Short Course Championships.

Retirement

Timmers retired at the end of 2020, aged 34, after a successful international career spanning around a decade.
