September MLB callups fans want to see
The last full month of MLB’s regular season usually gives teams who are out of playoff contention a chance to evaluate their younger players. The minor league season wraps up a few weeks before MLB’s, so certain top prospects have an opportunity to continue playing at the highest level. We’ll take a look at a few highly touted youngsters who might see big league action in September.
The Nationals have their sights set on future seasons, and may be inclined to take a closer look at a power bat. Wood was bumped up to Double AA in 2023, and has shown an ability to drive the ball out of the ballpark. Washington may opt to keep him on the farm this year though, as his average has dipped in Double A even though his power numbers have gone up.
For the first couple months of the season, it felt like the Diamondbacks were going to stick around in the National League playoff race. However, they weren’t able to maintain their hot start. Lawlar is knocking on the door of the major leagues, as he’s hitting around .300 in Triple AAA. He also had a very solid campaign at Double AA Amarillo.
Crow-Armstrong is a name many fans are already familiar with. He was the crown jewel of the haul the Cubs received in the Javier Baez trade back in 2021 from the New York Mets. He’s been touted as a strong defensive outfielder, and Chicago might rely on those skills as a late-inning substitution as they continue their playoff push.
Montgomery has shot up the ranks in the White Sox system. He hit .353 in rookie ball and .345 in High A. He’s hitting a serviceable 3.75 in Double A this summer. It might be aggressive for Chicago to rush his arrival to the major leagues, but rumors of discontent are swirling around that organization. It might prompt a hasty decision on their part.
Thanks to their exemplary drafting and player development, the Orioles are back in contention with a treasure trove of young stars. Baltimore didn’t need to add another name to the list, but Kjerstad might soon join the big club. The major league team is still fighting for a division crown, but Kjerstad may get a look if playoff spots are locked up heading into the final week of the season.
It seems pretty likely that Keith will have a chance to make the Tigers’ opening day roster in 2024, but Detroit may want a sneak preview sooner than that. He’s been productive at every level, and has shown a knack for putting the bat on the ball. It’ll be interesting to see if Detroit wants more power out of him as he develops.
At first glance, the Brewers don’t exactly fit the profile of a team who would be looking to start their future now. Milwaukee is right in the thick of the National League Central race. However, if they’re able to wrap things up early, they might bring Quero up for a few games to see how he looks against top tier competition.
There will be a lot of attention paid to the development of Acuna. He’s the younger brother of Atlanta Braves superstar Ronald Acuna, and was the centerpiece of the trade that sent Max Scherzer to the Texas Rangers. The Mets might be inclined to see a return on investment soon. If New York holds Acuna in the minors, they might instead opt to call up infielder Ronny Mauricio.
