Super Sunday

Arsenal takes on Liverpool on Sunday with the hope of consolidating their place at the top of the league even further and worsening Liverpool's chances of finishing in the top four.

A slim chance

Under Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool has enjoyed their best spell for over 30 years, but Klopp and his players are ten points off the Champions League spots with ten games remaining.

Past games

Games between the two teams have resulted in some of the greatest matches in English football, from Cup finals to league thrillers.

Rolling back the years

Let's go through the archive and look at the best games between Arsenal and Liverpool.

Liverpool 0-2 Arsenal, 1989 (5)

Back in 1989, Arsenal needed nothing less than a 2-0 victory against rivals Liverpool to win the old First Division.

Ending the drought

Goals from striker Alan Smith early in the second half and midfielder Michael Thomas in the dying embers of the game saw Arsenal win their first league title in 18 years.

Arsenal 1-2 Liverpool, FA Cup Final, 2001 (4)

A handball on the line, two Thierry Henry golden chances, and taking the lead through Freddie Ljungberg. Arsenal should have had the 2001 FA Cup Final wrapped up by the 60th minute.

Michael Owen's final

Despite all the Arsenal chances, a young and primed Michael Owen was too much for the aging defenders of Tony Adams and Lee Dixon, scoring twice in the second half, crowning Liverpool the champions.

Arsenal 4-2 Liverpool, 2004 (3)

It was Arsenal's invincible season, and the closest anyone got to beating them was Liverpool, winning the game 2-1 at the half-time interval.

French connection

Arsenal had been knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of a week, but French players Robert Pires and Thierry Henry would not let them lose another game. Pires equalized early in the second half, and Henry completed his hattrick, sinking Liverpool.

Liverpool 5-1 Arsenal, 2014 (2)

Liverpool's 2013-14 campaign will be remembered as the season they almost won the league after that Steven Gerrard's slip against Chelsea.

Best performance

Their best performance from that campaign was against Arsenal, mauling the Gunners 5-1, with goals from Raheem Sterling, Daniel Sturridge, and Martin Skrtel.

'Best we played'

According to fourfourtwo.com, Liverpool's manager at the time, Brendan Rodgers, said: "This was the best we've played since I arrived at the club."

Liverpool 4-4 Arsenal, 2009 (1)

The end of the 2008-2009 season was a cracker, with Liverpool challenging Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United right to the wire, knowing they had to beat Arsenal.

Slow first half

The first half between the pair was surprisingly slow, with only one goal coming from Arsenal's new signing Andrey Arshavin, putting the Gunners up 1-0.

Exploding into life

Goals from Yossi Benayoun and Fernando Torres gave Liverpool the lead before Arshavin completed his hattrick with another two goals. Torres gave Liverpool the lead again, but a thunderbolt strike from Arshavin snatched his fourth and point for Arsenal.
