The political dance that could get the NFL in trouble
The NFL is being overrun by a new trend, and it’s one the league may want to disappear as quickly as it arrived, given the political connotations.
The new trend has seen numerous players across the NFL celebrate touchdowns or sacks by dancing in a manner similar to how we have seen Donald Trump dance at some of his rallies.
The dance, which involves moving one’s arms and hips at a similar rhythm, has started to become a trend across the sporting world but is now being heavily featured in the NFL.

San Francisco 49ers defensive end Nick Bosa has not been subtle in his support of Trump, recently showcasing a “Make America Great Again” hat following a prime-time game. It is no surprise that the Niners star was one of the players to use Trump’s signature dance on Sunday.
According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Bosa said, “I think you know the answer to that question. All the guys wanted me to do it. I wasn't even going to do it, but the boys reminded me. And it was fun,” when asked what had inspired the dance.
There was a wave of support online for Bosa following his dance, with one fan writing, “Bosa and the Niners D just hit the Trump dance after a sack. The NFL can't fine him for that,” on X (formerly Twitter).
Las Vegas Raiders’ tight end Brock Bowers also showcased his Donald Trump impression after scoring a touchdown against the Dolphins on Sunday.
Of course, anything like this will raise eyebrows, but Bowers’ reason for doing the dance seem simple enough, with the rookie telling USA Today, “I've seen everyone do it. I watched the UFC fight [Saturday] night and Jon Jones did it. I like watching UFC so I saw it, and thought it was cool.”
Elsewhere around the NFL, the Detroit Lions defensive end Za'Darius Smith and Titans wide receiver Calvin Ridley were also spotted doing the dance.
The NFL has tried its best to stay out of politics in the past, so this new trend could be a worry for Roger Goodell and the rest of the league’s head office. However, Trump is the democratically elected president-to-be whether you like it or not and many NFL players will have supported and voted for him, which could just mean this dance is nothing more than a bit of fun.
