What we learned from Season 2 of Netflix’s Break Point
With the Australian Open, Netflix released the second season of its popular tennis show, Break Point. The show brought fans back together with stars they met in the first season, while giving viewers a backstage look at some different players as well. There was a lot to unpack in these six episodes, but we were left with some bona fide conclusions.
Aryna Sabalenka had a fantastic year on the court in 2023. She won the Australian Open, and was runner up at the U.S. Open. At the end of the year, she was ranked number one in the WTA. However, Sabalenka had to navigate succeeding without her father, who had passed away a few years earlier. She was seen crying with her mother about this on the phone after winning in Australia.
Francis Tiafoe’s personality shined through in the second season of Break Point, and appears to be someone that other famous people love to rub elbows with. He was shown speaking with Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry, and music star Justin Bieber requested to meet Tiafoe at the U.S. Open last August.

Chronicling the rise of Taylor Fritz has been fascinating during Break Point’s two seasons. Fans find Fritz entrenched as a top 10 player in 2023, but he often talks about the expectation level that comes with that standing. The mentality that it takes to go from good to great is something that Fritz’s wrestles with consistently.
Viewers might remember Daniil Medvedev’s shenanigans against Alexander Zverez most acutely from the show, but there was another glimpse into his personal life that was interesting. Medvedev is a competitive spirit who seeks to win in everything he does, including video games. He serves as a Game Ambassador for Rainbow Six Siege.
Holger Rune was featured as an up and coming player who battles his emotions just as much as his opponent. After one match against veteran Stan Wawrinka, Rune is told by the former to stop acting like a baby on the court. Rune responds in a Break Point confessional quite cheekily, saying that sometimes elders don’t always know best.

The second season got off to a bit of a bizarre start, as the show pushed a narrative that players featured on the show were cursed. In the beginning of the first episode, Break Point used imagery and themes more consistent with Black Mirror than a sports show. From the audience’s point of view, it seemed like the streaming network was searching intently for a new angle.
Tommy Paul came away as a winner in season two. Fans learned he is dating successful businesswoman Paige Lorenze, and was relatable in a heartfelt moment where his mother surprised him by flying to Australia for the Aussie Open. Paul also admitted that he used to drink heavily earlier in his professional career but has since stopped. That timeline mirrors his rise up the ranks.
There’s an interesting dynamic that Break Point touches on between American players Taylor Fritz, Francis Tiafoe, Tommy Paul and Ben Shelton. Each of them seems cordial enough to one another, wishing that the others perform well on the court. However, each of them harbors a burning desire to be the highest ranked American player.

The show does a great job highlighting the effect that parents and significant others have on tennis stars, and Aneke Rune’s presence was one example. She is seen trying to pump her son Holger up during a practice session. She told him that great tennis players “are the point”, while other tennis players “chase the points”. It was an interesting way to phrase the mental aspect of the game.
