Topic of discussion

For football fans across the United Kingdom, the main topic of conversation and debate is how many trophies their team has won.

'Big club'

Trophy cabinet size, number of fans, stadium capacity, and history are all key things that need to be considered when deciding if a team is a 'big club' or not.

FA Cup third round

With the third round of the FA Cup finished and some of the biggest clubs in the country out of the competition, it's fitting to see which of the biggest clubs haven't won a major trophy.

The biggest teams

Here are the biggest teams in England not to win a major trophy in their long history!

Fulham

After being one of England's powerhouses in the last 50s and 60s, Fulham have since struggled in the lower leagues until the 2000s, making one FA Cup Final in 1975.

Influx of money

Billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayad bought the club in 1997 and brought the West Londoners back into the Premier League, spending 17 of the last 24 seasons with the elite. However, they have failed to win a major trophy, finishing runners-up in the 2010 Europa League final.

Crystal Palace

Manchester United are the only team to stop Crystal Palace from having their dream of winning a major trophy, famously defeating them in an FA Cup Final replay in 1990 and winning in extra-time in 2016.

Last 30 years

Palace has had a bunch of close calls over the last 30 years, playing in six semi-finals split across the League Cup and FA Cup. Wigan, Swansea, and Birmingham have all won silverware, but Crystal Palace haven't been able to get over the line.

Brentford

Brentford has never stereotypically been a heavyweight club in English football, but since Matthew Benham took over in 2012, the club has gone from midtable in League One to the top half of the Premier League.

Missing that trophy

After the meteoric rise the club has been on, the only thing missing is a major trophy from their cabinet. The closest they have come is the League Cup semi-final in 2021, but with Ivan Toney back, could they end the streak?

Bristol City

Championship club Bristol City are a shock team on this list, having never played a minute of Premier League football in their history. Despite that, in the early 20th century, Bristol City was one of the best.

Golden years

Between 1907 and 1910, Bristol City played in the FA Cup Final in 1909 and finished second in the league in 1907. Over 100 years later, Bristol City haven't come any closer to reaching their dream of a major trophy.

Brighton and Hove Albion

Brighton and Hove Albion spent most of their history in the lower leagues of English football, but with seven successive seasons in the Premier League and in the knockout rounds of Europe, it could all change for Brighton.

Best period

Brighton has created a pathway to bring through young and talented players, and under coach Roberto De Zerbi, this could be the best period they will ever have to win silverware.

Watford

Watford is the most unfortunate team on this list not to win a major trophy, playing in two FA Cup Finals and one League Cup final in their history.

Exclusive club

The club from just outside of North London is an exclusive club of only eight teams to finish second in the top division and never win it. As they sit in the Championship, it could be a while until they play in a cup final again.
