Who are the top overseas players in the 2024 IPL?

The 2023 Indian Premier League saw perennial challengers, Chennai Super Kings overcome the upstart Gujarat Titans. The 2024 edition is looking as exciting as ever, with trades and player signings potentially opening the door for a new challenger this year!

The Kings have a stacked squad with talent almost everywhere, but Curran could well be the most influential of them all.

Tim David is a true T20 globetrotter, appearing at every franchise competition you could think of, and when you watch him bat you can understand why. A broad-shouldered power hitter, he can accelerate like few else, making him the perfect finisher in any lineup. Expect David to be a mainstay in the Indians lineup this season.

The Titans have surprised many in their first tow years in the IPL, win in 2022 and finishing second last year. A canny bowler with a good understanding of when to adjust his line and length, Nortje is a nightmare for opposition bowlers. The Capitals have a very good squad on paper and expect Nortje to be a key part of it.

Green burst onto the IPL scene last year with his explosive top-order hitting. His 452 runs came at an average of 50.22 and a strike rate of 160.28, per IPL. He was dealt to RCB in the offseason as Indians deemed him surplus to requirements following their move for Hardick Pandya.

De Kock is an opening batter who strikes fear into bowlers’ hearts, able to hit 360 degrees with power and finesse, there aren’t too many better options out there. 

There aren't many batters more explosive than Will Jacks in world cricket. His strike rate of 158.66, per ESPN Cricinfo, is elite for a top-order bat, and his recent 108* for the Comilla Victorians in the Bangladesh Premier League suggests he is in some devastating form.

Livingstone could well be the cleanest hitter of a cricket ball out there, regularly hitting balls out of stadiums with ease. His power game combined with his ability to bowl both off and leg spin makes him a versatile player able to match up well against almost anyone. If Punjab are to make any waves this season, the Lancashire man could well be a huge part of it.

Brook struggled somewhat in his first IPL last year despite scoring 100*. Outside of that innings he only scored a further 90 runs from 10 innings, per IPL. The talent is clear for all to see, so if he can work out his role in the Capitals' batting lineup, then don't be surprised to see him dominate bowlers.

Consistently one of the most-priced selections in T20 auctions around the world, the Afghanistan international has proven time and again why he is so highly thought of. Rarely going for more than 6 an over and able to add some quick runs at the death, Khan is a T20 master and expect him to show this off once again.

CSK could well have got a bargain in Conway, a quality batter in all formats, Conway is comfortable opening or batting three, Being left handed he can slot in and create mismatches for opposition bowlers. Conway played a pivotal role in CSK's championship last year, scoring 47 off just 25 balls to set up their successful chase, per ESPN Cricinfo.

Operating as a keeper-batter, the Trinidadian Pooran is a useful weapon in the middle order of any limited-overs side. An explosive batter with a career strike rate of over 140, his quick runs through the middle and late overs could prove pivotal for Lucknow if they want to push on in their second season in the IPL.

Buttle put together one of the great IPL seasons in 2022 scoring 863 of them at an average of over 57, but only managed less than half of that last year, per IPL. In the upper echelon of white ball batters in the world, Buttler has a chance to once again show his class in the pink and blue.

Currently battling with fellow leg spinner, Adil Rashid, for the number 1 ranked T20i bowler in the world, Hasaranga is pure quality. Bowling fast and skiddy leg breaks, and able to add valuable runs, the Sri Lankan adds great balance to any limited overs side, Sunrisers have a quality squad once again and could well be in and around the finals come crunch time. If they are, Hasaranga will have been a huge part of it.
