Tough at the top

If there is one position in sports that defines a team's chances, it’s quarterback. The signal callers are touching the ball every play, calling audibles, and how they perform will usually decide the game one way or the other. With that being said, let’s take a look at the very best in the business right now.

15: Jared Goff

Jared Goff had a mixed career whilst a member of the Rams organization but since being traded to the Lions he has come to life somewhat. He figures to be a key part of what looks to be an explosive offense in 2023 and if he plays well, the Lions could well be a surprise package this season.

14: Deshaun Watson

Were this two or three years ago, Watson would probably be sitting much higher on this list but after a long suspension and trade to the Browns, his performances last season were far from convincing. He is still a very talented player, so it would be no surprise if he rebounds this year.

13: Matt Stafford

Matt Stafford has probably spent most of his career being underrated, however, since being traded to the Rams and winning a Super Bowl, his talent has finally been recognized. The Rams are going to be terrible in 2023, but Stafford is still a very good player.

12: Kirk Cousins

Cousins is a tough player to rate as he always puts up big numbers over the course of a season but seems to fail in spectacular moments on the biggest stages. The Vikings will be a good offense in 2023 with rookie Jordan Addison adding to an already talented group, Cousins will certainly have some crazy numbers once more.

11: Geno Smith

After years in the wilderness as a backup, Smith lit up the league in 2022 as he fired the Seahawks into a surprise playoff berth when many expected them to be amongst the worst teams in the league. If he can have similar numbers again, Seattle are going to be a problem this season.

10: Tua Tagovailoa

Just sneaking into the top ten is the Miami Dolphins’ Tua Tagovailoa. The lefty signal-caller is the benefit of Mike McDaniels’ amazing offensive scheme and Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle being two of the fastest humans on earth but he played at near-elite level at times. If he can stay healthy, he could stake a claim as one of the best in the league

9: Trevor Lawrence

By the end of 2022, we were starting to see what made the Jaguars draft Lawrence number one overall in the 2021 draft. Big, athletic, and with a glorious head of hair, the ex-Clemson QB looks every bit the star. If he pushes on again this season, he will be viewed as one of the very best.

8: Dak Prescott

Prescott is viewed as an interception machine by many fans but the numbers don’t back that up for the most part. Last season wasn’t always pretty but a serious thumb injury saw him sidelined for months and he probably wasn’t at 100%. When fully fit, Dak is a very, very good player.

7: Jalen Hurts

In a shock to many in the NFL community, Jalen Hurts has been able to develop his passing game to elite levels. He showcased his abilities in a near-flawless performance on the biggest stage at the Super Bowl, with a rare fumble his only blemish. He has a fantastic supporting cast around him but his play is just getting better and better.

6: Aaron Rodgers

Aaron Rodgers threw double-digit interceptions for the first time since 2010 last season which could well be a sign he is on the decline. For someone as good as Rodgers, their decline still places them amongst the very best in the league. At this stage, there should be nothing but optimism for Jets fans in 2023.

5: Justin Herbert

There are very few players in the NFL who execute the play as designed better than Herbert. With excellent processing skills and an ability to rapidly go through his reads, the Los Angeles Charger is an incredible player. It looks as though there is another gear still to find, though.

4: Lamar Jackson

The 2019 MVP took a bit of a step backward last year as he spent a large period of the season out injured. This year, with a new contract signed and new weapons to throw to, Jackson is positioned to return to his absolute best, which is an essentially unstoppable weapon.

3: Joe Burrow

As Burrow said, for as long as he’s the Bengals’ QB, they have a chance at winning the Super Bowl. With a Super Bowl loss in 2021 followed by an AFC Championship game loss last year, he will be looking to finally clear that last hurdle in 2023.

2: Josh Allen

Like the Bengals, the Buffalo Bills are always looking to go deep in the playoffs with Allen under center. With a huge arm, great size, and an almost reckless lack of self-preservation, Allen is a coach’s dream. Hopefully for the Bills injuries don’t rear their head again, as when healthy, Allen is unstoppable.

1: Patrick Mahomes

Obviously, it’s Mahomes. He may well be the best to ever do it already. He won a Super Bowl last year despite having one functioning ankle, and put up one of the most efficient displays we have ever seen in the big game. He’s the best in the league and could well be for a good few years yet.
