MLB Power Rankings - a look at the top 15 teams in baseball

The MLB is in full swing with teams now approaching the 50-mark, so we thought it would be a good time to take stock and rank the top 15 teams in the MLB. Let’s take a look!

As ESPN puts it in their power rankings (ranked 13th), “The Red Sox have overcome a cascade of injuries to remain above water behind their unexpectedly elite starting rotation.” We struggle to disagree, but we need to see more from a team still seven and a half games back from the Yankees in the AL East.

Don’t look now, but the Astros are finding form in recent weeks, having gone 8-2 through their last 10. No one will want to face them if they make the playoffs given their recent record, which is why we have them here, even if it feels a little high for where they’re at right now!

The reigning champs still sit under .500 following a loss to the Phillies. Per CBS Sports, the Rangers sit at 12-14 against teams with a losing record. If you can’t stack wins against the bad teams, the playoffs could be a pipe dream.

Per the MLB website, Xander Bogaerts has started the season hitting 220 with a .266 OBP and only four homers. That’s not enough production from a career .289 hitter. He also recently left a game due to shoulder inflammation. It’s certainly not only Bogaerts’ fault, but it’s symptomatic of the issues.

The Twins sit 25-23, but in their last 10 games, they’ve lost eight. As Matt Snyder for CBS Sports notes, they have been beating up on the bad teams and have struggled when playing good ones. That may not matter in the regular season, but there won’t be many bad teams in the playoffs.

The Mariners sit five games above .500 and three ahead of the second-placed Rangers in the AL West. As ESPN points out, Julio Rodriguez only has two home runs to his name so far, if he can find a hot streak, he makes the Mariners' offense look far more dangerous.

As ESPN points out, the Cubs have found two gems in Shota Imanaga and Javier Assad, making their starting rotation look formidable. The Cubs and the Brewers look set to be battling for the NL Central all year, but the Cubs pitchers could be the difference.

Per Baseball Reference, William Contreras is batting .332 with seven homers so far this season, which, alongside his .931 OPS, puts him in elite company. The NL Central is going to be a fun watch all year.

Per MLB Media, the Royals recently went 10 games over .500 for the first time since their World Series-winning 2015 season. Seth Lugo is currently 7-1 with a 1.79 ERA, per Baseball Ref, which is always a handy stat line to have in your rotation.

Per Matt Snyder for CBS Sports, the Braves are 19th in runs scored this year. That they are still nine games over .500 is a testament to the talent they have, but if they’re not driving in runs, they won’t remain that way for long.

Per MLB Media, this is the first time the Guardians have won 30 of their first 47 games since 2011. They’re hot and with their lineup, they should stay that way.

In our opinion, a clear top four teams are emerging in the MLB this season, each within a hair’s breadth of the others. Someone has to be ranked fourth, and for us, it’s the Orioles. They currently sit one and a half games back from the Yankees in the AL East, which looks to be one of the most competitive divisions in baseball this year.

According to CBS Sports, the Yankees have gone 15-7 against teams .500 or better. That’s a remarkable line and should put them in good stead come the Fall.

The Dodgers boast some of the biggest names in baseball, with Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Freddie Freeman. A roster this loaded should be winning games, and they are, just not as many as the team in first place.

The Phillies sit 21 games over .500 through 49 games and boast a league-leading +83 run differential (tied with the Dodgers), per Baseball Ref. Ranger Suarez is unhittable, Alec Bohm is driving in runs for fun (on pace for 142 RBI per CBS Sports), Trea Turner should be returning to the lineup soon. There’s not many weaknesses.
