Stephen Curry considers drastically different career after NBA

It doesn’t seem like Golden State Warriors guard Stephen Curry is slowing down in his mid-thirties. His scoring average remains amongst the league leaders, and his three-point prowess is still unmatched. However, Curry has given some thought to what he might pursue after his NBA playing days are over. All statistics are sourced from Basketball Reference.

Curry appeared on “CBS This Morning” to promote his new children’s book, but was asked an unforeseen question by news correspondent Jericka Duncan.

Duncan asked Curry whether he would consider becoming a politician after retiring from the NBA. Curry said “maybe,” but would also expound on his feelings.

Curry continued, “I have an interest in leveraging every part of my influence for good… I’m not going to say the presidency but if politics is a way that you can create meaningful change or if there’s another way outside of politics.”

Duncan followed up with Curry about becoming the U.S. president one day, and the NBA guard said he wouldn’t run in 2028. However, according to the San Francisco Chronicle’s report, he didn’t completely close the door on the idea, either.

According to USA Today, Curry and his wife Ayesha have been active in charitable endeavors that aim to help people in the United States and across the world.

The couple launched the “Eat. Learn. Play.” Initiative in 2019, with goals to end children’s hunger and give kids the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and on the athletic field.

In 2012, Curry worked with the United Nations to grow their “Nothing But Nets” campaign, focused on fighting malaria. The sharpshooter donated three mosquito bed nets for every three pointer he made.

The four-time NBA champion has at times been communicative about his thoughts on American politics. According to the New York Times, Curry and his wife openly backed current U.S. president Joe Biden during his 2020 campaign.

It’s customary for NBA champions to visit the White House the following year after they’ve won it all. However, the Golden State Warriors opted not to make the trip there after their 2017 and 2018 titles.

Curry plays for Warriors coach Steve Kerr, who has been forthcoming in his opinions about American social issues. He passionately advocated for something to be done about gun violence back in 2022, which CNN said should stop people in their tracks.

Kerr’s father, Malcolm, was shot and killed in 1984 in Beirut, Lebanon. The current Warriors coach and former NBA player spoke about this in ESPN’s 2020 documentary, “The Last Dance.”

If Curry were to pursue a political career after his NBA tenure ended, he would not be the first basketball player to make the switch. Kevin Johnson and Bill Bradley served as mayor of Sacramento and senator of New Jersey respectively after they retired from the NBA.

According to Yahoo Sports, Curry feels like he has several high-performance years left in the NBA. “Eventually, you’ll get to the point where you will wake up, and whatever your body is telling you, whatever your mind is telling you it’s time. But I don’t think I’m anywhere close to that.”

In a 2023 Hoops Collective podcast, ESPN writer Marc Spears opined that Curry could continue to play into his forties. “We’re not seeing any Steph digress, and he’s been talking to Aaron Rodgers and Tom Brady about playing to forty or past forty.”
