The definitive NFL quarterback rankings before week 1

Every year, there are numerous quarterback rankings that, despite being well-written and clearly heavily researched, are just clearly incorrect. We thought it would be a good idea to finally write the correct QB rankings just to end any controversy.

Steven Ruiz of the Ringer has Jalen Hurts as the 17th-best QB in the NFL and describes him as a, “Good football player, average quarterback,” which is a distinction we are struggling to understand. In the same piece, Hurts’ EPA/Play, Success Rate, and Completion Percentage Over Expectation are all noted as 7th or above, so maybe there’s just an agenda there.

Love has the potential to shoot up these rankings over the course of the season. He is certainly helped by having numerous weapons at his disposal, but we can’t knock a QB for that, we can only view how they play in a vacuum, and Love is closing in on elite status.

As Eric D. Williams writes for Fox Sports, “The 36-year-old gunslinger still has one of the best arms in the league, proving a perfect fit in Rams head coach Sean McVay’s offense,” however, a leg injury and an offensive line struggling with injuries could prevent Stafford from playing at his peak in 2024. The league will be worse when Stafford eventually retires.

Maybe we are overrating Stroud’s rookie season a touch and should wait for a larger sample size before we anoint Stroud as an elite player, but, we’re not going to. Instead, we are going to make the bold proclamation that Stroud will be amongst the best QBs in the league for the rest of his career.

There is no doubting Herbert’s exceptional ability to process what the defense is giving him and make quick, accurate reads. He does, however, need to answer some questions in year five, mainly, can he win in the playoffs? There is no guarantee the Chargers even make it there this year, but Herbert putting the team on his back will go a long way to silencing any doubters.

We’re writing 2023 off for Burrow as he was never playing healthy, and it showed on the field. This season, we’re hoping to see him bounce back to his 2022 and 2021 level of play that made him one of the best players in football regardless of position. But, as Greg Auman asks for Fox Sports, “Will he stay healthy in 2024?”

We think it’s time for fans outside of Dallas to admit that Dak is one of the elite QBs in the NFL. Per The Ringer, he had the second-best EPA/Play and 3rd-best Success-Rate in 2023 which are elite numbers. Even in the playoffs where his team completely collapsed, he still went 41/60 for 403 yards and three TDs (two INTs). If he can cut out his annual pick-six in a big moment, he’s truly elite.

When Lamar is healthy, there are very few ways a team can hope to contain him. He’s too fast, he’s too smart, he’s too accurate, if he could improve his deep-ball accuracy, there will be simply too many ways for Lamar to beat you.

Allen is a freak, he’s bigger than most linebackers, faster than most safeties, and can throw a football a million miles an hour, the biggest knock on him is his interception numbers, with the Bills QB throwing 18 last year. Even that is less of a knock on Allen than most QBs due to the aggressiveness he plays with. Until he leaves Buffalo, the Bills will always be in contention.

We, and basically anyone who watches football, will be able to wax lyrical about Mahomes for eternity. He may be the best to ever play the sport. Josh Allen is a generational player, and Mahomes is a good way ahead of him in first place.
