Chrisantus Uche: The €800 striker who became a La Liga starlet
The first matchday of La Liga 2024/2025 in Spain brought plenty of interesting news, with one major surprise standing out: the emergence of a new and unexpected star. His name is Chrisantus Uche.
The 21-year-old Nigerian midfielder was the big bet for coach José Bordalás' attack to face a depleted Getafe against the recent Copa del Rey champions, Athletic Bilbao, at the San Mamés stadium. However, his gamble paid off...
After a summer full of rumours surrounding Nico Williams and his possible move to Barça, all eyes were on the Athletic winger, but Uche appeared to steal all the limelight.

Ernesto Valverde's team was ahead on the scoreboard thanks to a goal from Oihan Sancet in the 26th minute of the match, but in the 63rd minute, after emerging as a constant threat on the pitch, Uche appeared to score with a flawless header from a corner.
But who is Getafe's new star, and why haven't we heard anything about him until now? The answer to this question is simple: he wasn't a big-name signing.
Just two years ago, Uche was playing on the dirt pitches of Nigeria, as seen on his Instagram account. He remained largely unknown in the world of international football until his call-up to Nigeria's national team for the African U-23 Cup of Nations in November 2022.
It was then that the Nigerian pivot was recruited by Moralo Club Deportivo, a team from the town of Navalmoral de la Mata (Cáceres) of the Third Federation, the fifth category of Spanish football, with which he played 17 games in the 2022-2023 season and reached the playoffs for promotion to Second RFEF.
A year after arriving in Spain and making his debut as a professional footballer, he signed for Agrupación Deportiva Ceuta to play in the Primera Federación - the third tier of Spanish football. He arrived in the autonomous city to be part of his new club's reserve team, but his good performance led him to establish himself in the first team.

His meteoric rise is due to his great quality on the pitch. Getafe, a team in the Spanish Primera División, took notice of him and, finally, decided to sign him for the 2024-2025 season.
As was the case with Ceuta, the blue club's plan was to incorporate him into its reserve team, allowing him to continue developing and eventually become a valuable player for the first team in the future.
However, due to the current circumstances in La Liga, where many teams—including Getafe—are struggling to register their players due to FFP (Financial Fair Play), Uche has been presented with a golden opportunity.
In his league debut against Athletic, Bordalás only had 13 players available to play, a significant and dangerous limitation that led him to use players from his reserve team, including Uche, whom he did not hesitate to place as a starter in the unfamiliar position of center forward.

The rest is history... Uche revealed himself to everyone as a great player, an all-rounder who shines equally as a defensive midfielder as he does as a forward and, if that were not enough, he scored the goal that helped get the equalizer against a tough team like Athletic.
"He was very good, he is a very generous lad in his efforts. He made many moves and completed a sensational game," said Bordalás at the end of the match, his great supporter and the main reason why this footballer is one of the revelations of La Liga today.
The curious thing about this footballer has also been the low cost of his transfers over the last two years. Getafe signed him to their squad, according to Transfermarkt, for just €500,000 (£423k/$559k) from Ceuta, but the Ceutans signed him from Moralo… for just €800! A real bargain within everyone's reach.
La Liga starts with a new idol, this time to the delight of Getafe fans who, this season, will most likely enjoy Uche. Let us know what you think in the comments.
