The indisputable top 10 running backs in the NFL
Despite running backs being a dime-a-dozen these days, and for the most part, their skillset being devalued more and more over time, they are still a key piece in many NFL offenses. So we thought it would be a good idea to take a look at the best players at their position in the league. We included a picture of Bijan Robinson but spoiler alert, he didn't make the list, no doubt he will do with his performances in 2024.
Williams took over the starting job for the Rams in 2023 and excelled in Sean McVay’s offense, rushing for 1,144 yards at five YPC and 12 TDs, per Pro Football Focus. With another season like that in 2024, he’ll skyrocket up these rankings.
Saquon Barkley at nine?! We know we get it, this feels exceedingly low, but he only averaged 3.9 YPC last year. Per Apex Fantasy Leagues, running backs peak at around 25, Barkley is now 27, suggesting his best days could be well behind him.

Were it not for the infamous Tush Push, Deandre Swift would have broken double-digit TDs last season. Swift was initially part of a committee in Philly, but it soon became obvious he was the superior play, earning the starting role. He repaid the Eagles with 1,049 yards at 4.6 YPC, per ESPN.
We will die on the hill that Gibbs was over-drafted in 2023, but that doesn’t make him a bad player. In his rookie season, he rushed for 945 at 5.2 YPC, which is an impressive start. In Ben Johnson’s high-flying offense, he should have opportunities to kick on in 2024.
James Conner continues to grind out fantastic seasons. Not the biggest, or the fastest, he never takes over games, but he rarely fails to make an impact. As Maurice Jones-Drew writes for NFL Network, “Conner and a healthy Kyler Murray should make Arizona a real threat on the ground next fall.”
James Cook became the feature back in Buffalo last season and showcased why the Bills were so excited to have him. He rushed for 1,122 yards at 4.7 YPC, becoming the first Bills RB to break the 1,000-yard mark since 2017, per NFL Network.
Breece Hall makes rushing for 50+ yard TDs look ridiculously easy at times. Last year he put up 994 at 4.5 YPC plus 591 through the air, per PFF. He’s an uber-explosive back who can break a game open from almost anywhere.
Raheem Moster rushed for 18 TDs last year, which, according to NFL Network, led the league. During his pre-draft testing, Mostert posted a 4.34 40-yard dash, per Yahoo Sports, and despite his age (32) his speed remains. He is able to get to the edge faster than the defender almost every time.
Derrick Henry’s period of complete dominance is coming to an end as he ages, but he still put up 1,167 yards (4.2 YPC) and 12 TDs last season, per NFL Network. Now in Baltimore, he will continue to age gracefully with the added threat of Lamar Jackson surely opening things up for the big back. Henry will go down as one of the greats when it’s all said and done.
There is a huge gulf between McCaffery and the chasing pack at this point, with the Niners RB going from strength to strength in San Francisco. His 1,459 rushing yards came at 5.4 YPC, while he also added 564 yards through the air. His 21 total TDs tied him for the league lead, showing what a weapon he can be.
