Manchester United accused of coverup in Antony assault case
Manchester United and Brazil winger Antony has been accused of assault by ex-girlfriend Gabriela Cavallin, with attacks taking place in both Manchester and Sao Paulo.
Cavallin and her legal team have now also pointed the finger at Manchester United, accusing them of covering up Antony's assaults.
The accusations against both Antony and United centre around an alleged assault against Cavallin during the couple's stay at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Manchester. Antony is accused of headbutting and throwing Cavallin, with the supposed victim claiming Manchester United sent a club liaison to try and cover up the incident.
It is alleged that Manchester United sent a player support officer to the hotel who then contacted a club medical doctor in an attempt to stop the story from leaking.
The allegations accuse United of being heavily involved in a coverup by attempting to keep this incident out of the public eye by using club resources to keep it under wraps.
Cavallin's lawyers are pushing to get ahold of CCTV footage from the hotel and have asked police in Brazil to investigate the club support officers' role in the incident.
Manchester United have released a statement regarding these accusations, claiming that, whilst they did organise for a private doctor to see Cavallin, there was nothing untoward going on as this is common practice for family members of players. Their statement reads, "Any suggestion that the club covered up these allegations is categorically false."
The club have also been adamant they were unaware of any assault against Cavallin.
Manchester United and Brazil winger Antony has been dropped from the Brazilian national team after allegations of abuse surfaced.
Gabriela Cavallin, an influencer and DJ in Antony’s home country of Brazil has made a series of claims in both Brazil and Manchester against the Manchester United player.
Universo Online (UOL), an online news outlet from Brazil has reported having access to conversations, photos, and videos exchanged between Cavallin and Antony.
According to UOL, the exchanges showed evidence of, “threats, intimidation and physical attacks”, this included an attack so vicious it exposed bones on Cavallin’s fingers.
Cavallin’s complaints are not limited to the time the two spent together in Brazil, she has also accused Antony of attacking her, “with a headbutt” on the 15th of January. As well as being punched in the chest.
Greater Manchester Police have released a statement saying they are “aware of the allegations made and inquiries remain ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding this report“.
In a social media post, Antony has claimed innocence stating, “I can calmly state that the accusations are false and that the evidence already produced and the other evidence that will be produced demonstrate that I am innocent of the accusations made”.
Júnior Pedroso, a member of Antony’s management team has fired back at Cavallin claiming, “What can be observed is that she always appears in the media at moments when she knows she could harm Antony”.
For Manchester United, it has been a start to the season mired by controversy as they distanced themselves from Mason Greenwood following accusations of rape and assault. Despite charges being dismissed following the withdrawal of evidence from the key witness, United let the academy prospect go on loan to Spain.
