Marta Kostyuk's shocking decision to play Wimbledon... in her wedding dress

The annual Wimbledon tournament is a two-week festival of tennis, strawberries, pomp and circumstance and fashion. For players, their options are limited due to the all-white dress code enforced by the All England Club, but Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk caught the eye this year by wearing a replica of her wedding dress on the court.

Per Business Inside, Kostyuk has been playing in a slightly adjusted version of her wedding dress, with both dresses being designed by her sponsor, and iconic tennis brand Wilson.

The Ukrainian won two of her games at the All England Club whilst wearing the dress, which suggests it may have brought her some good luck!

The WTA-ranked number 19 player in the world had her dress designed by Wilson’s vice president of design Joelle Michaeloff and captures a uniquely bridal look.

The v-neck dress features a sheer overlay, reminiscent of a bridal veil, and with traditional wedding dresses already fitting Wimbledon’s all-white dress code, it suited Kostyuk perfectly.

With most wedding dresses stretching into the thousands of pounds, Wilson and Kostyuk may have found a more cost-effective solution, with Wilson charging just £232 (€275/$298)!

Wilson posted a video before the tournament explaining both the real wedding dress and the tournament-ready replica were designed to be, “light, comfortable, free, feminine” and “beautiful”.

Joelle Michaeloff told Vogue she wanted the original wedding dress to be, “easy and really functional,” whilst the fabric and techniques she used made the dress one of the, “most technical wedding dresses ever made.”

Michaeloff continued, “It really hugged and fit her like something she could go and play a match in,” thankfully for the wedding party, Kostyuk didn’t challenge anyone to a game during the wedding, at least as far as we know!

Kostyuk’s Wimbledon came to a disappointing end in the women’s doubles round of 16, losing in straight sets to the number two seeds.
