Out of the Copa America

The USA was embarrassingly dumped out of the Copa America on July 1st, losing controversially to Uruguay 1-0 and confirming their exit in the group stages.

Refuse to shake hands

USA's captain, Christian Pulisic, was furious with the referee after several dubious calls during the match. Shockingly, referee Kevin Ortega refused to shake the hand of 'Captain America.'

Making his point

Clips on social media show Pulisic screaming at the Peruvian officials, with the two linesmen eventually shaking his hand, but the referee Ortega stood firm and refused.

“Why aren’t you over there”

According to the Daily Mail, on the extended clip, Pulisic can be seen gesturing to the Uruguayan players and asking the referee: "Why aren't you over there with them?"

Weird decisions

Throughout the match, the USA players and fans were furious at some of the decisions by the referee. Defender Chris Richards was booked for a foul, but the referee opted to play advantage while booking him, much to the discontent of the USA players.

The goal

Uruguay's winning goal was controversially allowed to stand, as replays showed goalscorer Mathias Olivera was in an offside position before scoring his goal.

A terrible tournament

The poor decisions and the controversial goal still don't justify the USA being knocked out so early in the competition after being ranked as the fourth favourites to win it, according to The Guardian.

A shock loss to Panama

The USA beat Bolivia 2-0 in their opening game at the tournament before a shock loss to Panama after being 1-0 up and then losing to Uruguay.

A brutal review

US football legend Alexi Lalas delivered a brutal review of the tournament and spoke on manager Gregg Berthalter's comments about his assessment of the tournament.

"You lost, again"

According to the GOAL website, Lalas said: "Gregg Berhalter is going to be doing a review of the federation and everything that went on, as he made in his press conference very, very clear, that he's going to do that. I mean we just saw the freaking review. There it is. You lost again. That's the review."
