Will Caitlin Clark be a pain for Donald Trump’s presidential campaign?

With Election Day fast approaching in the United States, the attention being paid to the Presidential race between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris has ratcheted up to a “Fever” pitch. Pun intended, as WNBA and Indiana Fever superstar Caitlin Clark has seemed to indicate which way she might be leaning in the election.

Taylor Swift released a thoughtful social media post on September 10 that has received over 10 million likes and counting. In the lengthy post, she concluded by stating that she would endorse Kamala Harris for president. Swift signed the post as “childless cat lady”, which is a sarcastic nod to the comment made by Donald Trump’s running mate J.D. Vance a few years ago. Caitlin Clark was part of the boatload of support Swift received, as the Fever star also liked the post.

Amidst the millions of likes, Clark’s was singled out, as it prompted questions from society about her opinions of the presidential election.

Clark told the Indianapolis Star, “I think for myself, I have this amazing platform, so I think the biggest thing would be just to encourage people to vote. I think for myself this is second time I can vote in an election,” the 22 year-old said.

Clark continued on by saying, “That’s the biggest thing I can do with the platform that I have, and that’s the same thing Taylor did. I think continue to educate yourself with the candidates we have, the policies that they’re supporting.”

Clark did not explicitly come out and say who she would vote for, but her support of Swift’s post, which backed Vice President Harris, is being taken as a sign that the Indiana Fever star is leaning in the same direction.

Since Caitlin Clark was born in 2002, there have been five presidential elections. According to 270 To Win’s website, Iowa’s six electoral votes went to the Republicans three times, and the Democrats twice. Most recently in 2016 and in 2020, Republicans won Iowa, which is where Clark was born and raised.

Clark’s boyfriend, former Iowa men’s basketball player Connor McCaffery, seems to have indicated his support for Harris in prior months. As Marca’s website noted, McCaffery posted a supportive image and message for the Harris campaign when she took over the nomination in late July.

It’s unclear whether Clark herself will eventually plant her flag for Trump or Harris in a demonstrative way, but she wouldn’t be the first basketball megastar to get involved in the highly charged presidential race.
